Directive title [Year] - [Directive ID code]:

Mirovaja literatura (di L. Kamenev) [22-10-1934] - [D002]

Concise description of the directive:

More than the pre-revolutionary translations, the revolutionary interpretations of classic works cannot satisfy the new Soviet reader. Therefore, the publishing house is forced to retranslate and comment on them from scratch. In this sense, the publishing house is doing the work of an entire research institute of world literature, the foundation of which has already been defined by the party [the future IMLI Gorky – K.L.], but which does not yet exist. We must not imprison ourselves within the confines of the publishing business, but establish cooperative relationships with literary and art critics as well as with the wider reading public. Our books are to function as tools, through which party members and Soviet citizens can deepen their knowledge of culture.
