Concise description of the directive:

The “pathos of quality” in the literature of socialist realism involves a great deal of work on appropriating cultural heritage(osvoyenie kulturnogo nasledstva). Soviet literature must seek new forms with which to reveal the new historical reality. Yet it is not formalism, or the invention of absurd forms typical of bourgeois literature in capitalist countries. This new form is generated by its new content and is developed through the appropriation of all the culture of the past, reworked from a critical perspective. The form must be comprehensible to millions of people, rich, clear, simple and bold. Form is a weapon. The struggle for new literature includes the struggle for high quality in form. Questions of form are military matters, they cannot be neglected in the same way as purely aesthetic ones. The novelty of the form must be considered as the fruit of Soviet history; it is not correct to compare Soviet writers with past Russian or foreign writers because of the novelty of their forms. The new forms of bourgeois literature only deserved attention when the bourgeois class was the revolutionary class fighting against the aristocracy. Now, the literature of rotting capitalism makes a fetish of form. (FIGHT AGAINST FORMALISM)
