Four months ago it was decided to create a series of committees in the Writers’ Union. The commission of critics of Western literatures drew up its work plan, planned the publication of anthologies devoted to the problems of Western literature and discussed the presentation of two papers: 1) the problems of the historical novel in the West (Knipovich), topics: the characteristics of the latest historical novels by Western writers are described; the main trends among anti-fascist writers; 2) Paul Valery and formalism in art (Frid). Topics of the other scheduled lectures: processes in modern Western literature; the democratic theme in Western literature; the theme of the homeland in the works of Western writers; the philosophy of culture in the contemporary West; the problem of the new epos; the ‘small’ man.
