Dante, the greatest Italian poet, was forced into exile. A master of political satire, a tribune poet, expressed his great sorrow for his homeland in the Divine Comedy: [citation from the translation of Dmitry Min, Paradiso, XVII, 55-60 follows]. The history of world culture knows many examples of noble thinkers and artists who were subjected to persecution. “The school of exile” was Dante and Voltaire, Rousseau and Byron, Shelley and Heine, etc. Even in our days, when the black forces of reaction are reviving the most terrible times of the Middle Ages, the best masters of culture in the countries conquered by fascism are forced to live in exile. Western anti-fascist writers, who had already realised the anti-cultural character of capitalism before, now, after much doubt and research, finally side with the only popular front.
