The use of ironic inverted commas in these designations indicates that the author does not support these phenomena, or, at least, does not recognise them as acceptable. It is implicitly suggested to the reader that it is impracticable to achieve a ‘rabochee edinstvo‘ [workers’ union] between the categories, which are also ideologically connoted by the attribution of labels (specifically, communists and social-fascists). This rhetorical device, the repeated use of ironic inverted commas, denotes both a certain insecurity in terminological choices and, at the same time, a precise aggressive charge, since doubt is consciously and strategically instilled in the reader, with the aim of winning his consent and co-opting him within OUR group, thus making him ONE of US.
