Concise description of the directive:
In his historical report on the conclusions of the first five-year plan, Stalin spoke of the pathos of appropriation as a characteristic feature of the socialist struggle for the next few years. The pathos of appropriation concerns the question of culture. The Soviet writer is a writer of great culture. True cultural education means knowing how to harness all the wealth of culture accumulated by humanity to realise our goals in the struggle for socialism. The RAPP critique has schematised the great and vital doctrine of Marxism. We have to do a lot of work on literary form, an issue that had been altered in the doctrines of the formalists we unmasked. We need to use a historical approach to the legacy of the classics, which we must appropriate by thoroughly studying the historical development of the literature of past eras. A brilliant example of such appropriation is Gorky’s Vsemirnaya literatura. We must follow the path of Gorky, we must take possession of all the culture of the past, understanding it as a great historical process. We must not stylise or venerate culture as treasures in a museum; we must discover and revive the most vivid colours of the literature of the past.
