Concise description of the directive:
Literature is an indispensable part of the construction of socialist culture. The culture of the bourgeois West is rotten, decayed, condemned to decline by history itself. Idealism, mysticism, clericalism and the fight against technology are typical traits of modern bourgeois culture, as demonstrated, for example, by the words of Giovanni Gentile. Western bourgeois literature is infected by the same diseases that generally characterise bourgeois culture: the crisis of ideas, spiritual marasmus, the motifs of death, decadence, hopelessness and degeneration. Obviously, the great and unprecedented cultural construction in the Soviet Union had nothing to do with this. In this context, the importance of literature as an instrument of struggle for classless society and the transformation of human consciousness increases. Therefore, the party pays the greatest attention to the development of literature; in fact, all the main theoretical theses concerning literature, especially the one on socialist realism, were formulated by Stalin. The problem of language raised by Gorky in his later articles is especially important. The language of our literature must be worthy of the phenomena it describes.
