Concise description of the directive:
An issue entirely dedicated to Romain Rolland, on his 70th birthday. Among the articles is this one that traces the significance of Rolland’s work in Russia/USSR. In his anti-war pamphlets denouncing the chauvinist madness of the German intelligentsia, subservient to Prussian despotism, Romain Rolland follows the example of Maxim Gorky who always denounced the crimes of tsarism.
The great Rolland himself is an example for writers the world over in the irreconcilable struggle “for liberation from the prejudices instilled in him by his environment and upbringing”.
With revolutionary irreconcilability, Rolland opposes the subjugation of the spirit in his latest book Enchanted Soul. The idea of justice, true humanism, and a profound faith in the strength of man lead Rolland to the proletariat. He found social justice in the battles on the barricades against fascism.
The idea of international brotherhood, freed from the idealistic shell of the superclass spirit and dressed in the armour of world revolution, gave Rolland all the strength of a fighter and an artist.
Rolland freed himself from the decades-long constriction in the armour of Jean Christophe, which eventually became too tight for his creator, and embodied in the wonderful images of Enchanted Soul all the political passion that permeated his struggle against reaction.
The greatest artist and singer of the man of the future, Romain Rolland proclaimed his faith in the USSR as the first homeland of the new man, of new social relations, where the harmony of work and joy, whose triumph Rolland had sought all his life, is embodied. In what the Great Proletarian Revolution and the Lenin-Stalin Party created in the USSR, in the man who grows and creates under the guidance of a great master by creating a new society, Rolland saw penetratingly the true embodiment of the best ideas of humanity.
