The use of the negative-semantic phraseology ‘hiding under a mask’ is intended to directly criticize intellectuals and literati who pass themselves off as ‘friends of the USSR’ without really being so. Through the use of such an expression, a distorted picture of reality is consciously painted, with the intention of influencing the reader, drawing them to one’s side, co-opting them among ‘our own’ and demarcating a clear boundary with respect to ‘outsiders’. Thus, under the guise of simple information about the publication of the article ‘Fire on Friends’ by MORP Secretary Bruno Jasieński, the manipulative nature of the statement is concealed.
