The expression ‘kul’turnyj front‘ (cultural front) automatically places us in the semantic field of conflict and struggle, which in turn leads us back to the metaphor of war. The key concept here is the lexeme ‘front‘. In other words, the ‘cultural front‘ is part of the war that takes place on the battlefield of culture. This meaning of the lexeme “front” is marked as new in Tolkovyj slovar’ russkogo jazyka [Russian Language Dictionary] by D.N. Ushakov: “Ob”edinenie kakih-n. obshhestvennyh sil dlja obshhih dejstvij v kakom-n. napravlenii (nov.)” [Association of certain social forces for joint actions in a certain direction (new)]; “Oblast’, sfera, kakaja-n. otrasl’ gosudarstvennoj ili obshhestvennoj dejatel’nosti (nov.)” [Scope, sphere, a certain branch of state or social activity (new)]”. This expresses the idea that the means to solve any problem is through confrontation, pressure or struggle, whose goal is to break through the front. Cultural life is thus transformed into a political instrument, a necessary weapon for the achievement of ideological goals.
